What councillor Raiser learned on his summer vacation

Do you remember summer break? By that I refer to the time when usual responsibilities are absent, and one week could feel like an entire month.

Do you remember summer break? By that I refer to the time when usual responsibilities are absent, and one week could feel like an entire month. I've been asking that question a lot lately and the blank stares I receive speak much louder than if anyone actually said "no."

I re-experienced this feeling last week when I thought for sure August was over, yet it was only the 12th. This also made me realize just how much of my life is taken up with meetings.

You see, August is meeting free month for council. That means no council meeting, committee of the whole meeting, Lions, library board, 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Sustainability Corporation, local socials, public information meetings (PIMs to their friends), 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Oceanfront Corporation. Six different committees and numerous other work and volunteer groups I belong to take August off.

It's lovely. No hectic babysitter juggling or desperately trying to find 26 hours in the day to finish all the reading you have to do to before the next meeting.

It's a great chance to re-charge my batteries and I'll admit, I can't wait to get back in there doing what I can to make our community great.

This isn't to say I'm bored, far from it. I'm busy as ever being Daddy to two heartbreakingly beautiful daughters and preparing for renovation hell (there is no such thing as renovation heaven).

Yet even without meetings, council work continues to pile up in the form of emails and phone calls. For instance I continue to receive dozens of emails every week from passionate, intelligent citizens very much opposed to Garibaldi at 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料.

Plus many are absolutely disgusted (yet few are surprised) at our provincial Liberal government for deciding to pull funding from addiction services in our community. At the same time, there are threats of cutbacks to our library funding.

One thing is for sure, our MLA Joan McIntyre has her work cut out for her because her constituents are very upset. And I remain sceptical that she has enough power to do anything about her party's devastating cuts to our community. I suppose time will tell.

I'll end by wishing you a fantastic weekend and if you haven't already, I urge you to sign up for my monthly email newsletter at www.bryanraiser.com - or just email me.

Not only do you get a glimpse into this nutty job, but it also serves as a monthly reminder that I'm here to listen to anything you want to tell me. And that point is huge since this job is all about communication.

Well, that's all for now, have a great one and see you around town,
