Letter: Disappointed in ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ council regarding LNG

I’m writing this letter to express my deepest disappointment regarding the decision on the Woodfibre LNG project (DP000599) during the District of ÀÏ°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±¼Ç¼×ÊÁÏ hearing, on Nov 7th, 2023.

I understand that the ultimate decision wasn’t entirely within the District’s discretion, but I couldn’t help but notice the stark contrast in the approaches taken by different councillors during the hearing.

It was disheartening to witness one councillor posing seemingly trivial questions to delay the proposal and ultimately rejecting it, while others approved the project without any resistance.

If one councillor can do it, which shows their values and what they stand for, then others can too.

This disparity in engagement left me frustrated and questioning the commitment to the community’s best interests.

We all know that the decisions around this project is probably the biggest one they can make on their term and that will significantly contribute to their legacy as councillors. Many of the community members elected our council members with the hope that they will stand against Woodfibre LNG.

This project has the potential to bring unprecedented harm to our environment and community. It feels somewhat hypocritical that the council has declared a “climate emergency” and has been actively working towards a “climate action plan,” yet decisions like that on Nov. 7, to establish new fossil fuel infrastructure seem to pass through without any resistance.

That being said, I do want to acknowledge the efforts the council has made in the past to stand against this project, but regrettably, in this instance, I feel that they’ve fallen short of the expectations of our community.

It’s obviously easy to make decisions when the path is clear, but it’s in situations like this, where they need to go above and beyond, that’s where their commitment (or dare I say their competency) truly shines.
