Riders cycle through a cloud of dust after a vehicle sped down Spit Road on Sunday.

Drivers need to slow the bleep down on Spit Road. Or the only solution may be to shut down the road to vehicles completely.

The beautiful weather this weekend on the river was spoiled by yahoos racing down the dirt road, creating dust clouds in their wake.

This wasn’t an isolated incident, and it is not a new concern.

It has been an issue for years, long-time locals tell us.

There were at least a few cars in the ditch along the road in recent months.

And walk along the sides of the road in the gravel, and there is trash that looks suspiciously like it was thrown from moving vehicles.

The speed limit is 30 kilometres per hour on Spit Road. With all the potholes, it could easily be argued that going slower than that is a good idea, not just for the vehicle but for the many runners, cyclists, dog walkers and the like who aren’t driving.

Further, traditional S岣祑x瘫wú7mesh Úxwumixw (老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Nation) activities still take place within the estuary.

Not to mention that the 673-hectare Skwelwil ’em 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Estuary Wildlife Management Area is — wait for it — a protected wildlife area.

There is no end of wildlife that finds sanctuary from us there — black-tailed deer, black bear, cougar, coyote, moles, voles, and rabbits, to name a few.

Endangered species found there include the marbled murrelet, and keen’s long-eared myotis, according to the provincial government site on the area.

With respect to habitat, the noise and dust pollution threaten the terrestrial and aquatic habitats of the estuary, notes Chessy Knight, of the .

Before folks get all finger-pointy at one particular group, the s season is well-over now, and the vehicles, at least on Saturday and Sunday this week, did not seem to be carrying watercraft, so more likely, these are folks coming for other reasons.

We could suggest much more prominent signage and enforcement —  the District says the is the primary agency for speed enforcement on Spit Road and the has the power to ticket if violations are observed.

But seriously, can’t we all just respect the place?

We should add this is a problem on other forest service roads in town too.

Do a small number of inconsiderate folks have to ruin it for Mother Nature and the rest of us?

Just slow down and consider your impact on others and the environment.

Let’s give it a try.
