Dear Mayor and Council,
I would like to voice my concerns regarding the proposed firefighter cutbacks.
As others have pointed out, the compromises to both public and firefighters safety is of utmost concern - and, for me, it's simply not an option.
Another concern seldom mentioned is the consequences to our firefighters' health. Studies have shown and it is now recognized that firefighters with accumulated exposure to toxins are significantly at higher risk of developing cancer. Our own former councillor and dear late friend, Ray Peters - a career firefighter - succumbed to cancer.
The proposed cutbacks will undoubtedly lead to a "do more with less" scenario, and inevitably the resulting ongoing stress and fatigue that is, itself, a detriment to health. But for our firefighters, inherently of a self-sacrificing nature, this could result in them foregoing important preventative measures that could minimize risks to their health.
For me, regardless of the past and any miscommunications, it is more important, and I hope a priority of the council, to focus resources on what is - reviewing the facts and information that has come to light so that a timely solution can be implemented.
I appreciate the challenges that council face and trust that a way can be found to avoid burning the few that sacrifice to put out the rest of our fires.
