On Monday, Feb 16, at approximately 6 p.m. I had the misfortune of witnessing a dog being hit by a car at the downhill entrance into Valleycliffe. The dog was running loose, weaving in between cars. I was looking for a spot to pull over so I could get him off the road, while the fellow behind me was flashing his headlights at oncoming traffic as a warning to others. To no avail as I heard a sickening thump followed by a whining and crying pooch. I ran over and helped, putting the dog in my vehicle to take to the emergency veterinarian. The dog was bleeding and could not walk. At this time the owner ran up, inquiring whether it was his dog. He kept on referring to the dog as "it," not "him" or "her," and seemed to be in a state of irritation, not concern - however this is conjecture on my part. Given the general matted hair and stench coming from the animal it was obvious he was not taken proper care of. Unfortunately, from what I know in the neighbourhood, this individual has a habit of letting his dogs run free. I would like to respectfully suggest to this man to please take better care of your dogs, do not let them run loose in the street to be hit by cars, take them for walks instead. Give your dog a bath, because he really reeks. Please consider being more responsible to your pets and more considerate of your neighbours. I hope your dog will be OK, and that he is not facing a death sentence because he was running around loose.Thank you to everyone who stopped and helped, and to everyone who had enough patience to wait while we stopped traffic to tend to this poor animal.Chris Kiely
