I have read with great interest the ideas being presented in The Chief for the legacy grant from VANOC ["Help spend $750K Olympic Legacy," The Chief, Aug. 3].
The proposal being presented to council that I feel would have the greatest positive impact to the broadest group of our community involves putting artificial turf, track and field and clubhouse facilities at the current location of the all weather fields at Brennan Park.
There are over 900 youth currently registered in 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Youth Soccer, as well as men's and ladies leagues that use these facilities. 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 does not currently have any track and field facilities for our youth or adults. A turf field at this location could also be used for field hockey, lacrosse and football.
As an avid soccer player and coach, I have travelled throughout the province and have yet to come across a community the size of 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 that does not have such facilities already in place.
I am also always surprised by the volume of usage these fields/facilities get, especially by the community at large which uses the tracks as a walking/meeting facility.
We currently have youth and adult players choosing to not continue playing soccer as our facilities - namely the all weather fields - are not enjoyable to play on, and our grass fields are frequently closed due to rain. Not to mention the fact that playing and training on the gravel fields increases the rate of injury.
If we did have a first class facility in 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 this could lead to great economic benefits for our community. With our proximity to the Lower Mainland and accommodations available we could become a tournament centre, bringing in hundreds of participants and tens of thousands of dollars to our community. 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 could host numerous events, including BC Summer Games.
While I am not trying to diminish the economic and social benefit of all the various sporting activities in and around 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料, I believe that the proposed turf and track would provide the greatest return for the investment.
If you have any doubt about the sheer numbers of potential users from a wide range of socio and economic backgrounds that would use such a facility, head down to Brennan Park any night of the week or on a Saturday morning. It is like the Test of Metal every weekend!
