WINNIPEG 鈥 Semyon Varlamov would not allow his lack of work in the first period detract him from the job at hand.

The Islanders netminder faced only one shot in the first frame on his way to a 23-save shutout 鈥 his second of the season 鈥 to backstop New York to 4-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets 鈥 their third straight loss 鈥 on Sunday afternoon.聽

鈥淪ometimes, it鈥檚 easy, sometimes, it鈥檚 very, very hard,鈥 Varlamov said. 鈥淚t depends on how mentally you prepare for the game. I was very hungry to play today so, for me, it wasn鈥檛 very hard to stay sharp.鈥澛

He was actually expecting to face a lot more pucks.聽

鈥淲e expected them to jump in right away,鈥 Varlamov said. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e a hard team to play against here in their home arena. They always come out really hard and they always play a very strong first period and stuff like that.

"We knew this was coming and that鈥檚 why we were really prepared and then, everybody was ready to play from the first minute and I thought that was the key of the game. We didn鈥檛 give up much in the first period. We scored first and that was the key.鈥澛

Bo Horvat, with a short-handed goal, Alexander Romanov, Brock Nelson and Adam Pelech, into an empty net, scored for New York (31-25-7).聽

David Rittich stopped 20-of-23 shots for Winnipeg (35-24-1) before 13,797 fans at Canada Life Centre.聽

鈥(Varlamov) just stays solid,鈥 Nelson said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 the kind of guy who just goes out there and works hard and never says anything. Even in practice, he鈥檚 always solid. He鈥檚 a good teammate and to see him go out there and get a shutout 鈥 a big one for us 鈥 and be a rock for us was huge.鈥澛

Horvat鈥檚 goal in the first period sparked the Isles.聽

鈥淭he short-handed goal was big, there鈥檚 no doubt about it,鈥 said Islanders coach Lane Lambert. 鈥淭hey have a very good power play over there and, to come out of that period with the lead having been short-handed, was helpful for us.鈥澛

The Jets fell to 20-10-0 at home this season.聽

鈥淚t just wasn鈥檛 good enough,鈥 said Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey. 鈥淲e need to be better in the first periods, we need to be better off the start, and we can鈥檛 be a fragile team right now. I鈥檓 not saying that we are, but we certainly can鈥檛 fall into that mode.聽

鈥淲e鈥檙e an aggressive team. We have to be able to make plays, make passes and not just panic because we鈥檙e going through a little bit of a rut.

"I thought we got better at that throughout the game so, although it鈥檚 a tough loss on the scoreboard, there were a lot of things that we did well in the second and third, things that we鈥檙e going to try and build off. I mean, there鈥檚 no use being negative this time of year. We鈥檝e got 20-some games left. We鈥檝e got to stay positive and confident in our group and continue to move forward.鈥

The Jets have scored only nine goals in their last six games.

鈥淲e all gotta figure it out,鈥 said centre Pierre-Luc Dubois. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not playing good hockey right now. But, at the same time, we can turn this around and turn it into a positive.

"We just gotta get going. Time鈥檚 running out. There鈥檚 not a lot of games left, relatively. But everybody in this room is going to have to talk about it and figure it out.鈥

NOTES

With his goal, Nelson set a new career high of 60 points in a season. He now has 16 points in his last 17 games. 鈥 Horvat also hit a new career mark with his 62nd point of the campaign 鈥 Newly-acquired Jet Nino Niederreiter did not dress for Sunday鈥檚 contest against the Islanders. Niederreiter was addressing a visa issue, so the Jets recalled forward Axel Jonsson-Fjallby. 鈥 The Isles were missing injured forwards Mathew Barzal (lower body) and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (upper body). Forward Josh Bailey returned to action after missing three games with an upper-body injury.
