WINNIPEG — Three Winnipeg police officers are facing assault charges after a man was injured during an arrest a year ago.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba says an probe into the allegations has determined there are reasonable grounds a criminal offence occurred.

The police watchdog previously reported an off-duty officer witnessed a man allegedly attempting to steal a catalytic converter near the city's downtown and there was a chase after the officer tried to confront the suspect.

The officer found the man and a fight took place before uniformed officers arrived and took the suspect into custody.

The man was later sent to hospital where he was found to have a fractured bone around his left eye.

Constables Evan Fehr, Barry Knudsen and Tyler Rahn are set to appear in provincial court on May 15 for assault causing bodily harm charges.
