Maya, a Grade 4 student听at 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Montessori School, was chosen by district staff and Mayor Patricia Heintzman to act as 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料鈥檚 Mayor for a Day.
鈥淚t was very surprising,鈥� the nine-year-old said of being chosen.听
In her written submission to the district鈥檚 Mayor for a Day contest, the young girl wrote about 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 needing enough shelters for the homeless and protecting animal habitat.
鈥淭he animals should have a place to live, so make most of the forests surrounding us, a provincial park so the animals can stay there and live there for as long as they live,鈥� she said.听
Her essay was chosen out of the 80 submissions received at the district from local elementary school students, according to the mayor.听
鈥淪he was very thorough,鈥� said Heintzman. 鈥淪he thought of so many different aspects of everything and was really thoughtful about, not just about wanting a Dairy Queen or a waterpark. It was very thoughtful about what would make a good town in the future.鈥�
Maya was joined by two deputy mayors, 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Montessori School Grade 1 student Aliya Gaudin and Brackendale Elementary School Grade 5 student Alex Jones.
Aliya鈥檚 submission focused on animals as well and her love of snow tigers, Heintzman said.听
鈥淚 also said I want 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 to look like Disneyland,鈥� Aliya added.听
Alex鈥檚 essay shared his vision for solar-powered boats and other independent forms of energy. He also promised carrot muffins 鈥撎齛nd delivered, Heintzman said with a laugh.听
The Mayor for a Day contest winners spent Friday morning with Heintzman doing various activities such as visiting the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 SPCA, touring the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 RCMP detachment and riding a 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Fire Rescue truck. They also got to share a pizza lunch with their classmates.
Heintzman said it was great to see young students in 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 so full of vision and ambition. When she was the ages of the contest winners, she didn鈥檛 envision herself as a future mayor, she said.
鈥淢y brother is always the one who wanted to be prime minister and did all the debate club and stuff,鈥� she said. 鈥淚 was not that person. I was the person out there protesting against apartheid or more ice cream at lunch or whatever the big issue of the day was.鈥�
Heintzman added she later learned activism is good for creating a broader vision, but to lead, you have to think about everybody, not just those who agree with you. 鈥淎ctivism is good to get you going, but activists without vision don鈥檛 make good politicians.鈥澨�
Maya said she may consider a future as full-time mayor of 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料. 鈥淢aybe, yeah,鈥� she said. 鈥淚t is pretty cool鈥� this has been a very good experience.鈥澨�
The Mayor for a Day contest was held as part of the district鈥檚 celebrations of Local Government Awareness Week.
