Mathew McConaughey on HBO. Ordinarily I鈥檇 need a few hundred words to convince you to watch a new drama on TV but come on鈥� McConaughey is hitting them out of the park lately and the streak continues in HBO鈥檚 newest crime anthology series True Detective.
The series opens with Rust Cohle (McConaughey) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) as two detectives plunging headlong into a case revolving around a young woman ritualistically murdered in the woods. From there the series follows the two detectives in two timelines. While Woody balances the family/cop life, Mathew balances the seen-horrible-darkness-world-is-full-of-morons/cop life and together it鈥檚 magic. While the original case started in 1995, it switches to present day, where the two are being interviewed by the police about the historic crimes and recent events.
In a nutshell, what we have here is a complete package of top-notch acting, writing and directing.
The nice bonus about this project is its ability to land such big (traditionally, movie) actors. Since neither star is continuing to the second season, they have successfully created a perfect platform for a revolving cast and short seasons. That is fine by me as the eight episodes this series stretched was the perfect spellbinding size and certainly sets a high bar for the next season.
At this point I just want to talk about the plot, but that would not enhance your enjoyment of this gritty crime extravaganza. And seriously, McConaughey is in it 鈥� if it鈥檚 quality you seek, you shouldn鈥檛 need more than that鈥� enjoy.
