'On the Street' set to go

Cleveland Ave. to be transformed into hive of entertainment this weekend

What was originally meant to draw dollars from Live at 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 concert-goers downtown is quickly turning into a community event, says the spokesperson for downtown businesses.

On Saturday (Aug. 25), Cleveland Avenue will be bustling with art, face painting and a wide range of entertainment for the On the Street celebration, said Christine Bennett of the Downtown 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Business Improvement Association (BIA). From 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., the street will be transformed into a pedestrian walkway. Bands will strut and strum their stuff at the O'Siyam Pavilion and on the rooftop of Newport Market.

"Vendors will be on the street, as well as a sidewalk sale," Bennett said.

From 9 a.m. until noon, golden pancakes will be flipping, as the Elks hold a breakfast sponsored by Chef Big D's. The park will be a hive of activity, Bennett noted, as it plays host to slacklining and yoga demonstrations. Homebase Studio will also showcase graffiti art.

"We are going to have a kids' zone with sidewalk chalk art," Bennett said.

Folks from the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Historical Society will be on hand to show off old pictures and talk about the way things were. Non-profit organizations will set up displays, letting residents know about various local initiatives.

The BIA is encouraging people to come downtown on foot or by bicycle.

"There are some great bike routes now in 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料," she said.

This is the first year the association has organized a downtown event to coincide with the three-day music festival. The arts and cultural components of the event grew to the point that it is now registered with the B.C. Cultural Crawl, Bennett said. If things go well, the extravaganza may become a regular activity, she added.
