Movie critic Bryan Raiser takes a look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now available on DVD.

When watching The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, it鈥檚 hard not to think the only reason it even exists is to annoy the heck out of any and all fans of the book. But of course, that鈥檚 crazy talk as everyone knows it鈥檚 for the fat stacks. Watching 眉ber fans knot their knickers is just the cherry on the cake.听

So this, the second movie made from Tolkien鈥檚 smallest, most simple tale does continue where the first one left off. Bilbo Baggins and the dwarves are off to see the wonderful dragon named Smaug.

Much like the first film in the trilogy, this one takes a couple of pages of the book and turns it into a three-hour epic by adding lots and lots of orc fights. Blood, gore and action are great time killers and easily eat up a lot of buffer time.听

If that wasn鈥檛 enough, they also decided to give lots of screen time to Legolas. 鈥淏ut he wasn鈥檛 in this book,鈥 I hear a bunch of nerds lament. True, neither was he in a love triangle with another elf and a dwarf, but suck it up, Poindexter, this movie isn鈥檛 for you 鈥 it鈥檚 only for that indiscriminate family fantasy movie cash.

Thankfully, Smaug looks pretty cool, and once you accept the fact that it鈥檚 not an adaptation of the book, it鈥檚 just a prequel to the LOR movies; it鈥檚 fine, mindless entertainment.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is now available on DVD and therefore everywhere online鈥 good luck with that.
