Local talent to be showcased

'Inspiration' concert a fundraiser for Howe Sound Music Festival

Inspiration. It's the theme of the night. This Sunday (Jan. 20), local performers will come together to put on a concert as a fundraiser for the Howe Sound Music Festival. The hour-long recital will also double as inspiration for others interested in pursuing music.

"It's something we've done for a few years now," executive director Veronica McPhee said of the festival, which will take place in April.

The festival was founded in 2000 by Colleen Koop. After a hiatus in 2009, the festival has returned to be produced annually by the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association and is now in its 12th year. It serves as an opportunity for music students in the Sea to Sky Corridor to perform and be adjudicated. Until that time, though, it's the mentors' chance to show the pupils how it's done.

The Inspiration concert this weekend is meant to feature adults who pursue music as a career. The docket will consist of local music teachers, past Howe Sound Music Festival success stories, and other local music enthusiasts performing a variety of pieces spanning across several genres. From jazz to classical music, from vocal performances to piano pieces, and original compositions, there's a little something for everyone.

"Music is such a component to our lives," McPhee said.

The goal, she added, is to "inspire the students to learn and share music with each other."

The concert starts at Sunday at 2 p.m. at St. John the Divine Anglican Church. Admission is by donation.
