Heat up, tune out

There are countless great documentaries explaining in detail the downward spiral of this toilet Earth, and there are just as many fantastic shows of good people, in broken systems, doing horrible things.

There are countless great documentaries explaining in detail the downward spiral of this toilet Earth, and there are just as many fantastic shows of good people, in broken systems, doing horrible things.

Thankfully, there are also movies that are perfect for when you're looking to shut down and be mindlessly entertained for 88 minutes. When that mood strikes, might I suggest Akiva Schafer's Hot Rod. It's not just a recommendation, but with so much SNL crossover, it's pretty much a guarantee that at no time during this viewing will you be needing any part of your brain.

Hot Rod takes place in average town USA, where everyone seems to be going through an '80s revival. The star of the show is Rod (Andy Samberg), a man-boy who fancies himself a stunt man like the picture he has of his dad. His time is usually spent with his crew setting up stunts - then, with his beat-up moped, crashing into said stunts.

At home, his relationship with his father-in-law is the classic son-tries-to-gain-respect-by-beating-up-father-in-law-only-to-repeatedly-get-his-ass-kicked. It helps that Rod's father-in-law is the magnificent Ian McShane.

But when the in-law turns sick, Rod decides to throw down a huge fundraising jump so he has one last chance to punch him in the face. Joining the fun is a cast who are no strangers to brainless comedies. There's Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Isla Fisher and even Will Arnett drops by to do Will Arnett-type things.

When good enough is plenty enough, Hot Rod is currently streaming on Netflix.
