Free your inner Banksy

There are two challenges to reviewing Banksy's Oscar-nominated Exit Through The Gift Shop. First, this is definitely a film that is better the less you know of the plot. The second is the challenge when looking at any of Banksy's work, since it inevitably involves him pulling something over on someone.

For those just tuning in, Banksy is quite possibly the most famous visual artist alive and no one knows his true identity. Stencil street art is his go to, with millions of pieces showing up worldwide.

Exit is the story of Thierry Guetta, an eccentric French-American clothing store owner who had a quirk of taking a video camera with him literally everywhere he went. (I'm not misusing the word literally). One day while visiting family in France he stumbled upon his cousin, who is the legendary street artist Space Invader. Thus Thierry was exposed to an exploding scene.

With unlimited access, Thierry was able to document the most famous artists in action. What follows is absolutely remarkable library footage capturing brilliant works of art that are often covered up within days or hours.

The best part is the film is not just documentary footage, as Banksy also tells the story of comedic drama that is Thierry. Which brings us back to the idea that the less you know going in, the more you will enjoy it. Suffice to say, the story arc is something that has to be seen to be believed. But even at the end you can't help asking yourself, Just what the hell is going on around here? Classic Banksy.

Exit Through the Gift Shop is currently streaming on Netflix for your immediate viewing enjoyment.
