Celebrating a season of lights

S2S Singers bring together different traditions for festive performance

Many cultures celebrate holidays and observances in different ways during the winter season, but Sea to Sky Singers' director Veronica McPhee was more taken by what they all shared in common.

"I've always been interested in celebrating," she told The Chief. "Christmas time gets a lot of attention here, but I'm always interested in how and why other cultures celebrate through the dark days of winter."

She noticed how many cultures chase away that cold darkness in the same way.

"When you think about it, so many choose this time to celebrate with light," she said. "Diwali, Chanukah, Advent, Winter Solstice and Christmas all celebrate with the light of candles, lanterns or coloured lights. Stars, too, get special notice during this time of year."

So McPhee, along with assistant director Aaron Purdie and accompanist Colleen Koop, devised a performance to showcase all those traditions in a concert called Light, taking place at St. John the Divine Anglican Church on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday (Dec. 8) at 2 p.m.

"The Sea to Sky Singers brings these traditions together with beautiful and festive songs," McPhee said. "The STSS sing in four different languages to touch on five different customs. In addition to choral selections, there are also members of the choir who will sing in small ensembles."

Audiences can expect more than just listening to great singing, as well.

"To add flair to the Diwali portion of the concert, STSS will be joined by young local Bhangra dancers, Taranjot and Imjot Thandi," she said. "And, as has become the STSS tradition, a sing-along encourages the audience to engage in the experience."

McPhee said the concerts will appeal to everyone.

"Regardless of your culture or customs, the STSS offer many musical surprises to make this concert an en-'light'-ening experience for all ages," she said.

Tickets for the show cost $15 (kids under 12 get in for free) and are available at Newport Market, Concrete Blonde, or at the door.
