Breaking with tradition

Three 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 artists take their art forms into new territory

When Susan Pedersen has sewn her final stitch, the next step is to show the quilt to climbers.

The 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 artist wants to ensure her panels of fabric depict the different facets of the Stawamus Chief. It doesn't have to be exact, but it has to be recognizable, she says. Pedersen's last creation featured the Black Dyke climbing route.

"Normally when you think of quilting, you think of baby quilts and wall hangings," Pedersen says. "These are non-traditional."

With a background in watercolour painting, Pedersen switched mediums when she became a mother. Sewing allowed her the freedom to leave a project and come back to it without repercussions for the piece.

Pedersen's quilting veered away from Laura Ashley-type pieces to art resembling contemporary paintings after she discovered Kaffe Fassett. The San Francisco native revolutionized fabric art when he exploded onto the knitting and needlepoint scene with bright and geometric partners.

"He is unconventional," Pedersen says. "I saw his stuff and thought, 'Oh, this is for me.'"

As a quilter, you can never have too much fabric. However, quilting is as much about what you take out of a piece as you put in, she notes. She has a drawer full of designs that didn't make the cut.

"I have a grey fabric colour obsession right now," Pedersen adds.

Pedersen's work will be on display alongside Nancy Ricker's photos and Fran Solar's wire weaving at the 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 Adventure Centre until Feb. 10.

Some of Ricker's pictures mimic the tapestry-like qualities found in Pedersen's pieces. The 老澳门六合彩开奖记录资料 photographer plays with panning, light and exposure to create an abstract quality in her work.

As with the other two artists, Solar has split from the traditional method of her art form. Solar weaves with metal wire. Playing with "masculine materials" with traditional "feminine techniques and forms" is endlessly entertaining and challenging, she says.
