TORONTO 鈥 A coming-of-age film set in Scarborough and an immigrant story that's been a hit on the awards circuit are among the Toronto International Film Festival's top selections of the year.聽

TIFF's annual Canada鈥檚 Top Ten list includes Clement Virgo鈥檚 latest project 鈥淏rother,鈥 based on David Chariandy鈥檚 novel about two Trinidadian-Canadian brothers growing up in 1990s Scarborough, a neighbourhood in Toronto.聽

Also making the list is 鈥淏lack Ice,鈥 by director Hubert Davis, a documentary that explores the role race played in hockey through a collection of first-hand accounts from players past and present.聽

Another pick related to identity is 鈥淩iceboy Sleeps,鈥 based on Korean Canadian director Anthony Shim鈥檚 experiences growing up in British Columbia in the 1990s, which has picked up awards at film festivals in Toronto, Vancouver and Windsor, Ont.聽

TIFF says the Canada's Top Ten selections will screen Jan. 26 to 29 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

It says the list is chosen by programmers in consultation with industry panellists, filmmakers and festival programmers from across Canada.

The other features that made the list are: "Cette Maison" by Miryam Charles, 鈥淐rimes of the Future鈥 by David Cronenberg, 鈥淚 Like Movies鈥 by Chandler Levack, 鈥淪omething You Said Last Night鈥 by Luis De Filippis, 鈥淭o Kill a Tiger鈥 directed by Nisha Pahuja, 鈥淩osie鈥 by Gail Maurice, and 鈥淰iking鈥 by St茅phane Lafleur.聽
