NEW YORK (AP) 鈥� 鈥淧eople, stop texting me!鈥� pleaded Kecia Lewis, with comic exasperation. The veteran Broadway performer had just won her first Tony award in a 40-year career, for the Alicia Keys musical 鈥淗ell鈥檚 Kitchen,鈥� and was trying to read her acceptance speech off her phone. But she was being distracted by those pesky congratulatory texts.
soon had the laughing audience in tears, though, describing how in those four decades she had wanted to give up many times 鈥� but got enough encouragement from the right people to keep going. Many award winners encourage others to pursue their dreams, but Lewis, in a speech that was one of the night鈥檚 best, issued a blunt order: 鈥淒on鈥檛. Give. Up!鈥�
are often the most entertaining of awards shows, with Broadway performers showing their best work. Sunday鈥檚 show was no exception, with high-energy performances augmented by special appearances from the likes of Jay-Z ( ) and Hillary Clinton.
As always, the Tonys crowned both veterans (Jonathan Groff, best actor in a musical) and newcomers (Maleah Joi Moon, best actress in a musical), and had the added factor of making history for women: Female directors accounted for seven of 10 directing nods, including four of five best musical nominees. Danya Taymor won for directing 鈥淭he Outsiders,鈥� the second woman in her family to do so after her aunt, 鈥淭he Lion King鈥� director Julie Taymor.
The lauded by David Adjmi, about a rock band trying to make a hit album and stay together, was crowned best play as expected. But the final award of the night brought an upset that had people whooping with surprise. 鈥淭he Outsiders,鈥� based on the classic youth novel, beat out 鈥淗ell鈥檚 Kitchen鈥� for best musical. Nothing like a last-minute nailbiter to send the crowd out buzzing into the night.
Some key moments
Starting off with a bang 鈥� and a bit of confusion
The audience at Lincoln Center鈥檚 David H. Koch Theater, a new venue for the Tonys, came to its feet with the first musical excerpt of the night, from 鈥淗ell鈥檚 Kitchen鈥� 鈥� a jolt of joyous high energy. A medley of songs introduced the show鈥檚 stars 鈥� including Lewis, singing with young sensation Moon 鈥� before a piano rolled onstage with Keys herself, singing her and Jay-Z鈥檚 2009 smash 鈥淓mpire State of Mind,鈥� and trading lines with Moon. The crowd REALLY went nuts when descended from the stage, left the auditorium and joined 鈥� well, appeared to join 鈥� Jay-Z himself, rapping his lines on the steps in the theater鈥檚 grand lobby. It turned out, though, that the duet on the steps, transmitted to the audience via video screen while the cast continued dancing onstage, had been pretaped, though the crowd was clearly meant to think it was live. "Had to do something crazy,鈥� Keys explained, mid-song. 鈥淚t鈥檚 my hometown!鈥� Crazy, indeed.
鈥楽uccession,' still succeeding
The HBO hit 鈥淪uccession'' just keeps on giving. No fewer than three of its stars have recently gone on to give starry stage performances. On Sunday, it was turn for Tony glory. The actor, who played troubled media scion Kendall Roy on TV, took home his first Tony as best actor in a play for the revival of Henrik Ibsen's 1882 鈥滱n Enemy of the People." And while Kendall would surely not have done this, Strong thanked the unsung, invisible heroes of Broadway 鈥� 鈥渢he ushers and the front of house staff, who see me walking in every day looking like I've just been run over by a truck,鈥� he said, 鈥渁nd see me walk out somehow looking even worse.鈥�
The boy wizard is now a Tony winner...
may have made his name 鈥� and fame 鈥� as Harry Potter onscreen, but he鈥檚 now an established stage actor. On Sunday, he won his first Tony in five Broadway shows, for best featured actor in the revival of 鈥淢errily We Roll Along,鈥� the George Furth musical that moves backward in time. 鈥淭his is one of the best experiences of my life,鈥� Radcliffe said. Speaking of his obvious kinship with castmates Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, with whom he performed 鈥淥ld Friends鈥� on the telecast, he noted: 鈥淚 don鈥檛 really have to act in this show, I just have to look at you and feel everything I want to feel. I will never have it this good again.鈥� Groff cried in the audience.
And so's his 鈥極ld Friend鈥�
Then it was Radcliffe鈥檚 turn to cry when was named best actor in a musical (鈥淢errily鈥� also won best musical revival). Groff 鈥� beloved on Broadway and previously nominated for 鈥淪pring Awakening鈥� and 鈥淗amilton鈥� 鈥� told the crowd that he used to watch the Tonys in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, as a kid. He paid tribute to his parents in the audience: 鈥淭hank you for letting me dress up like Mary Poppins when I was three,鈥� he said. 鈥淭hank you for letting me act out scenes from 鈥業 Love Lucy鈥� on my 10th birthday. Thank you for always allowing my freak flag to fly without ever making me feel weird about it.鈥�
Thinking of family
Like Groff, Moon was thinking of family when she won best actress in a musical for 鈥淗ell鈥檚 Kitchen,鈥� in a tight race with veteran Kelli O鈥橦ara. The 21-year-old, who plays a role loosely based on Keys, dedicated her award 鈥渢o my parents 鈥� Dad, you鈥檝e been working all your life. Mom, you came to America at 17 and you鈥檝e been surviving ever since. 鈥橦ell鈥檚 Kitchen鈥� is about a 17-year-old on the cusp of a dream. I can鈥檛 imagine how many dreams deferred, how many sacrifices you made to give me the life I have today. So tonight, all I hope is that you just get to celebrate.鈥�
She knows of what she speaks
Hillary Clinton may have been a U.S. senator, secretary of state and first lady, but she's also a confirmed theater geek 鈥� one of the reasons she was greeted with one of the warmest standing ovations of the night. But she was appearing now as a producer, introducing Shaina Taub鈥檚 musical about the early-20th century suffragists. 鈥淚 know a little bit about how hard it is to make change,鈥� Clinton told the crowd with a bit of a wink. She added: 鈥淣ow it is an election year, and we need to be reminded how important it is to vote.鈥� Earlier in the evening, Taub, only the second woman in Broadway history to write, compose and star in a musical, won for both best score and best book, and issued a similar call. 鈥淚f you are inspired by the story of 鈥楽uffs,鈥� please make sure you and everyone you know have registered to vote,鈥� she urged.
Speaking of women and history...
Danya Taymor 鈥� niece of Julie, the first woman to win a Tony for directing a musical 鈥� became the sixth woman to win the honor, for 鈥淭he Outsiders,鈥� an adaptation of the novel by S.E. Hinton, in which she pulls off an extraordinary fight scene that is part drama, part dance, and all explosive power. Taymor issued a message 鈥渢o all the young artists out there who want to create," telling them that "what some may perceive as a weakness or a liability in you might just be your superpower. Don鈥檛 be afraid to trust your gut.鈥�
Lobster, and life lessons
More life lessons were on offer over drinks and small plates at the afterparty. The audience streamed out of the Koch theater and across Lincoln Center Plaza, where a glittering disco ball had been installed above the famous fountain. At David Geffen Hall, home to the New York Philharmonic, guests dined on risotto with lobster, corn and asparagus; foraged mushrooms with pancetta; grilled shrimp and steak. Most of all they mingled, and Lewis, carrying her Tony, was a key draw. In an interview, she reflected on the time she had considered quitting acting, around eight years ago, 鈥淥ne of my girlfriends said, 鈥榃hat are you gonna do, are you gonna drive a bus? You won鈥檛 be happy.鈥�" She said she had driven for Uber and Lyft for a while. Ultimately, she got her break. Lewis, who plays a stern but influential piano teacher and mentor, says that after shows, she speaks with fans who often raise their own stories of mentors. 鈥淭hey all talk about their auntie, grandma, cousin, piano teacher, vocal coach, gym teacher. And I always tell them: 鈥楪o thank them. If they鈥檙e still with us, thank them.鈥欌��
